Hurricane Harvey of 2017 is tied with 2005’s Hurricane Katrina as the costliest tropical cyclone on record, inflicting $125 billion in damage, primarily from catastrophic rainfall-triggered flooding in the Houston metropolitan area. Harvey was the wettest tropical cyclone on record in the United States. The resulting floods inundated hundreds of thousands of homes (approximately 336,000 people were left without electricity), more than 30,000 people were displaced, and more than 17,000 had to be rescued. Throughout the state, 103 people died in storm-related incidents: 68 from the its direct effects, including flooding, and 35 from indirect effects in the hurricane’s aftermath.
